Few Americans are more at home while abroad than Rick Steves, which is why it’s odd to hear him admit palpable fear before a recent excursion.

That’s because Steves, who since 1973 has spent about four months a year visiting Europe to gather information for his TV programs, radio show and books, was headed somewhere he always considered scary — Iran.

But what he learned, which he documented in his one-hour PBS special Rick Steves’ Iran that debuted in January, was that most of his fears—as well as several broad assumptions about the culture—were inaccurate.
