Lutheran congregations are the fourth largest religious group sponsoring Boy Scout units (behind the Methodists, Mormons and Roman Catholics). In the past year scouts in 4,335 Lutheran chartered units increased nearly 2 percent to 149,087 boys. Former scouting professional Clifford Mansley says chartering a scout unit can be an integral part of a church's youth ministry "as long as you are up front with parents when the boy joins that you'll have a prayer, that you'll make sure the kids go to church and that when you're out on a camping trip there will be a devotion."
