Fired, retired

The Vatican announced May 2 that it had removed William Morris, Roman Catholic bishop of Australia's Toowoomba Diocese.

Morris said he was forced out for suggesting in a 2006 letter that it might be time for the church to consider married priests and women's ordination.

Earlier, the Vatican reported April 4 that Australian bishop of Maitland-Newcastle Michael John Malone was retiring early, because he was "emotionally drained" by dealing with cases of clergy sex abuse.
