The average Lutheran in Norway goes to church once a year, according to 2010 statistics released in March.
Laila Riksaasen Dahl, bishop of the Diocese of Tunsberg, attributed it to attendance at children's baptisms.
"While these numbers are growing, the number of regular churchgoers is dwindling," she said. "We should not end up as merely a ceremonial church. ... It is evident that congregational core groups are dwindling." She said the social trend is to give priority to "what suits us and our needs."
