Christians commemorated the World Day of Prayer March 4, an annual event focused this year on the struggle of women in Chile. Under the theme "How Many Loaves Have You" participants read about Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000 (Mark 6:30-44) and reflected about and carried paneras (Chilean for breadbaskets).
"Bread is an exceedingly important part of life in Chile," said Eileen King, executive director of the World Day of Prayer, adding that it becomes particularly important in times of crisis.
Chile is still recovering from 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and a military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990.
