Q: My son is involved in a fundraiser for his neighborhood baseball team, and he wants to ask for donations at church. What do I tell him?
A: Congregations sometimes allow youth members to solicit support for their extracurricular activities, especially if it's for a nonprofit endeavor.
It's not unusual to find Girl Scouts selling cookies, for instance, or to read a bulletin announcement about an upcoming fundraiser. But rules about members fundraising can vary widely from congregation to congregation.
Before your son solicits donations at church, it would be smart and courteous to seek prior approval from the youth director, pastor or congregational council.
