Jose Martin Giron, president of the Christian Lutheran Church of Honduras, asked global partners to pray for an end to violence in the Central American country.
In the political turmoil since a 2009 coup ousted Manuel Zelaya as president, "children don't go outside to play; neighbors rarely visit each other and women spend their days trapped inside their humble homes," Giron said.
Church leaders said a Lutheran congregation in San Pedro de Sula was forced to close its building due to the violence but was grateful that Anglican and Reformed churches were willing to share their facilities.
"These are areas where every day is one of death and survival," read a statement from the Lutheran church.
