Plunging Lutheran

Cathy Gottschalk, a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, South Burlington, Vt., was among 1,150 participants who ventured into the icy waters of Lake Champlain in February during the 16th Penguin Plunge.

The event raises funds for the Vermont Special Olympics, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This year's plunge raised about $360,000.

A circus-like parade of teams decked out in tutus, pirate gear, beaks, snouts and even plungers made its way from heated tents past cheering crowds and (briefly) into 34-degree water.
