Raheli, 27, and her children no longer live in this home in Machame, in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro region. Raheli, a widow, is HIV-positive and the house was compromising her health.
She received a new home courtesy of "Houses for Health," a partnership between the ELCA Nebraska Synod, Alegent Health (an ELCA and Roman Catholic-affiliated health system in Omaha), and her community. The program provides safe housing for those with severe health challenges such as HIV or tuberculosis.
Robert Kasworm, an Alegent employee and member of Lord of Love Lutheran Church, Omaha, lives in Machame and directs the program.
