Mainline numbers down, Pentecostals up

Mainline Protestant churches in the U.S. continue to experience decades-long decline, but memberships of Pentecostal traditions are on the rise, according to figures compiled by the National Council of Churches.

Total church membership reported in the 2011 Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches is 145,838,339 members, down 1.05 percent from 2010. The figures were compiled by churches in 2009, reported to the NCC in 2010 and released Feb. 14.
