Getting out of church

Creative congregations worship in nature's sanctuary

Truth be told, few of us enjoy the prospect of spending part of a summer Sunday in a humidity-filled sanctuary tugging at knotted ties or tight stockings, all the while hearing sun worshipers beyond the stained-glass windows head to the beach or park.

But some pastors are appeasing our restless souls by leaving the pulpit behind and taking services to nature's church.

Ladies and gentlemen! Start your engines! True, it's not the usual Lutheran benediction. But then again, rolling down your car window to receive communion isn't typical either.

First Lutheran Church, Janesville, Wis., worships on wheels during the summer, catching motorists before their day of boating or picnicking.
