After 21 Christians were killed New Year's Day in a car bombing outside a Coptic church in Alexandria, Egypt, Pope Benedict XVI encouraged Christians to "persevere in the faith and in the witness of nonviolence."

He denounced this and other outbreaks of what he called "Christianophobia," including Dec. 30 bombings that killed two Christians in Baghdad, Iraq; Dec. 24 killings of six Christians at churches in northeastern Nigeria; and a Dec. 25 blast that injured six at a Roman Catholic church on Jolo, an island in the Philippines.
