I've just returned from teaching in Singapore where conversations with students and faculty raised issues for U.S. churches. Christians comprise 13 percent of Singapore's population, although numbers might be underreported. The churches are all city churches.

In many ways, Singaporean Christians correspond to the majority of U.S. Lutherans: They live in a highly technological society and are tempted by countless opportunities for consumerism. They have trouble connecting with their neighbors because of the busy tempo of their lives and often want the experience of Sunday "church" not to demand too much of them. But in three arresting ways, Singapore's churches help us ask good questions about our ELCA churches.
