Sign of Hope, a German rights group backed by Roman Catholic organizations, is pleading for action to save the Sudd, a Sudanese swamp that is one of the world's largest.
Klaus Stieglitz, vice chair of Sign of Hope, said oil and poisonous chemicals are seeping into drinking water for more than 550,000 people.
If the Sudd — which helps clean the waters of the Nile — is destroyed, "it will be an environmental disaster," he said.
