Egertson resigns as bishop

Bishops ask him to step down after his participation in 'irregular ordination'

Paul W. Egertson announced his resignation as bishop of the Southern California (West) Synod, effective July 31. Egertson said he was asked to do so by ELCA Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson following Egertson's participation in the April 28 "irregular ordination" of Anita Hill in St. Paul, Minn.

Egertson, 66, who wasn't expected to seek re-election when his term expires Aug. 31, announced his decision in an open letter May 26 to the synod's rostered ministers and council members. In the letter he reported the events that led to his resignation.
