Sam Allison, 22, a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hartford, Conn., and the New England Synod council, had just finished his shift as lifeguard at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in Hartford when he was summoned.
A man had collapsed from cardiac arrest and was wedged between a treadmill and elliptical.
Later, emergency personnel credited Allison and two other lifeguards, their skills in basic CPR and an automated external defibrillator (the portable heart-shocking devices often located in public buildings) with saving the man's life.
