Check out a bicycle at Roanoke College and more …

Roanoke College, Salem, Va., got the wheels spinning on "RCycles," a campus bicycle-sharing program at its Fintel Library. Students, faculty and staff can check out five bicycles, as well as helmets, for up to seven days at no charge. Dave Wiseman, library information systems, said there's a waiting list for the bicycles.

The Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg (Pa.) and the Adams County Historical Society received a $4 million grant toward an $11.7 million project to preserve Schmucker Hall (Old Dorm), one of the most important surviving Civil War buildings not owned by a public entity. When Gov. Edward Rendell released the grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, he called the Schmucker Hall project "a gift to our nation." Built in 1832, Schmucker Hall will be the site of a state-of-the-art museum about the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, religion and churches at the time of the Civil War, and the hall's role in the Underground Railroad and as a field hospital.
