ELCA help for 2010 tsunami

At presstime, the ELCA sent $46,280 for immediate relief after an Oct. 25 earthquake and tsunami killed at least 340 people in the Mentawai Islands off the coast of West Sumatra, Indonesia.

About 20,000 people were displaced from their homes and at least 10 villages were swept away.

The ELCA is working alongside 12 Indonesian Lutheran churches and a relief agency, Nommensen (Lutheran) University Center for Disaster Risk Management. Members of the Protestant Christian Church in Mentawai (a Lutheran church body) lived in most of the affected villages, said Franklin Ishida, ELCA director for Asia and the Pacific.
