Emphasize giving over getting

Parent asks how to encourage children to think of others

Q: Each year my kids get caught up with their individual wish lists of presents they want for Christmas. They tend to forget that giving to others is an important part of the holiday season. How can I excite them about the spirit of giving?

One way to get your kids' attention
One way to get your kids' attention is to flip through this year's ELCA Good Gifts catalog.

A: One way to get your kids' attention is to flip through this year's ELCA Good Gifts catalog. It includes affordable opportunities to support the animal-related projects of ELCA World Hunger.

A $10 donation, for example, is enough to provide a flock of chicks to an impoverished family. Eggs produced by the chickens provide food and a source of income.

Donations like this can be made in honor of a child's friend, teacher or relative — and you can send a gift acknowledgement card by e-mail or print one out on your computer.
