Light scatters darkness

As the cantor sang, "Jesus Christ, you are the light of the world," the congregation responded, "The light no darkness can overcome."  

That's how midweek worship began at Carlton Hills Evangelical Lutheran Church, Santee, Calif., two days after Charles "Andy" Williams shot and killed two students and wounded 13 at Santana High School March 5.

Prior to beginning Holden Evening Prayer by Marty Haugen (G.I.A. Publications Inc., 1990), I noticed more worshipers than usual. The shooting had grieved us all, whether we had children who attended Santana or not. Our view of the world as a safe place was shattered.
