Jay E. Trygstad played the part of mad scientist this past summer. The pastor and the 300 or so parishioners of St. Mark Lutheran Church in the Chicago suburb of Worth were the subjects. Their work and home lives acted as a laboratory.
In May, Trygstad, the church's pastor the last 14 years, launched the "St. Mark Stewardship Giveaway."
Standing in front of the congregation while holding an offering plate filled with $7,000, he encouraged each member to grab a $50 bill from the stack. Then he offered up a few ground rules:
