Bishops take stock of figures

After being urged to move forward and have the ELCA get over being "timid" about mission and ministry (page 74), the Conference of Bishops meeting in early October in Chicago received a raft of facts and numbers that outline some of the challenges facing the denomination.

Christina Jackson-Skelton, ELCA treasurer, told the bishops and synod vice presidents and seminary presidents gathered with them that total operating revenue was down about $6 million so far in 2010 compared with 2009. The biggest drop occurred in mission support income (money from congregations to the churchwide organization via synods), down $5 million from a year ago, she said.
