As of Oct. 1, 544 congregations had taken first votes to leave the ELCA, most in reaction to steps taken on sexuality issues at the 2009 Churchwide Assembly. Some congregations had taken more than one first vote, so a total of 576 first votes have been taken.
Of these, 395 passed and 181 failed. A total of 273 congregations have taken second votes (one congregation has taken two second votes). Of the total of 274 second votes, 258 passed and 16 failed. This is based on information provided by synods to the Office of the Secretary.

The numbers in this article don't make sense. The first line states that 1,544 congregations have taken a first vote. In line five, it states that 576 first votes have been taken--is that an error and the actual number of first votes is 1,576? Please correct online if possible.

When reading say as of October first 544 took 1st votes. Some took a second 1st vote (32 congregations), 32 plus 544 equals 576.
