After two days of debate, the joint synod of Italy's Waldensian and Methodist Protestant churches agreed in August to allow blessings of same-sex unions "where the local church has reached a mature consensus and is respectful of different positions."
Before the decision, a group of Waldensians took out an advertisement in Riforma, a Protestant weekly newspaper, warning that the issue could be church-dividing.
There are 25,000 Waldensians and 5,000 Methodists in Italy.
