Zaytuna College, the first U.S. Muslim college, has begun its inaugural year in Berkeley, Calif., with 15 students.
The four-year, accredited liberal arts college has an Islamic identity but is open to all faiths.
The college grew out of a pilot seminary program at Zaytuna Institute, a continuing education effort begun in 1996 by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, an American-born convert.
Founders hope many of the school's students will go on to serve the Muslim-American community as imams, nonprofit managers and Islamic schoolteachers.
