Voting continues

ELCA Secretary David D. Swartling reported that as of Aug. 3, his office had been informed that 504 congregations had taken first votes to leave the denomination.

Of those, 348 passed and 156 failed. Of those passing, 212 had taken a required second vote of which 199 passed and 13 failed.

The votes to leave came in response to the 2009 Churchwide Assembly votes on sexuality matters. A month before the assembly, the ELCA had 10,239 congregations.
