A Sunday without fuel

New York congregations will observe "No Fossil Fuel Sunday" Aug. 1 to send a message of accountability to oil companies. Atonement (Saugerties), St. Paul (West Camp) and Christ (Woodstock) Lutheran churches pledged to not use lights, organs, air conditioning or fans, and to serve refreshments made without electricity (unless made the day before).

People were encouraged to walk to church or carpool with at least three people.

One pastor will walk to and from church (15 miles round trip) as a fundraiser for the National Resource Defense Council for cleanup and relief work along the Gulf Coast.
