Lutheran World Relief received a $949,959 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to address the growing food crisis in drought-stricken Niger.
The grant will help more than 40,000 people in rural Kalfou receive food relief and future food security.
The plan includes a cash-for-work program that will rehabilitate dams and wells, and help conserve soil and water; goats and sheep to restock families' depleted herds; training local women's groups in animal husbandry; and establishing five community-run animal feed banks.
