Presidential prayers and thanks

Pat Earle, a religion professor at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, N.C., holds a handwritten note from President Barack Obama.

Earle, an Episcopal priest, wrote to Obama in March, saying that serving as president was a bit like being a pastor of a congregation: "For clergy the first year ... is something of a honeymoon, but the second one is often a time of criticism and censure. If one can hang in till the third year, things seem to get better, and it usually takes about five years to see the dreams for the [congregation] come to some kind of fruition."

Obama thanked Earle and asked for her prayers.
