Immersed in a global village

Youth learn of Russian culture and ministries

On a weekend retreat last fall, 25 young people, including four teenagers from Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo, N.D., exchanged vouchers for a soup-kitchen dinner — a bowl of vegetable soup, a small piece of ham, a meager serving of plain rice and a slice of bread.

A sharp contrast to the four-course Russian meal they ate the night before, this simple dinner made tangible the lives of people served by the Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy's soup kitchen, an ELCA-supported ministry in Russia.

The retreat, held at Concordia Language Villages, an ELCA ministry in Bemidji, Minn., was a Global Mission Village weekend.
