Eucharistic understandings

Friedrich Weber, a Lutheran bishop who deals with relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany, urges the churches to make a joint declaration on their shared beliefs about the eucharist.

"Our understandings of the eucharist or Lord's Supper are no longer that far apart," Weber said, while allowing that different understandings of church doctrine and ordained ministry prevent sharing together in the Lord's Supper.

In related news, Lutheran Bishop Eero Huovinen of Helsinki said that Finland's Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches admit there's greater consensus on baptism and communion, which "could make the path toward shared communion easier."
