Although Sudanese elections held in April were not free and fair, Ramadan Chan Liol, head of the Sudan Council of Churches, said they are a key step in implementing the country's 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The pact, between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army, ended 21 years of civil war, fought mainly in the south.
