Candlestick maker, Emkay Candle, Syracuse, N.Y., will cut 80 percent of its 46 employees, because of decreased business from Roman Catholic and other parishes.
Rolly DeVore, general manager of the 85-year-old religious candle company, blamed congregational mergers and closings, and insurance requirements that ban unsupervised candle-burning.
Once Syracuse had five candle companies — now only Emkay and Cathedral Candle remain.
