Either the "blinkered eye of tradition or the earplugs of sectarianism" are preventing Christians from being one, John Christie, the moderator of the (Presbyterian) Church of Scotland, told 1,200 people gathered in May to mark the 450th anniversary of the Scottish Reformation.
"The world of 2010 does not need or want a divided church," he said, referencing the spread of the Scottish Reformation beginning with John Knox, who worked alongside the reformer John Calvin in Geneva.
