You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart (Psalm 51:6).

The voice on the line was perky, feminine: "Hello, I'm from an opinion research company, and I'd like to ask you a few questions."

"Sure," I said, waiting for the sales pitch. The first questions were about my work habits. I could visualize the interviewer reading from a list she had plowed through many times. Her voice sounded that way, strictly routine. We were in a kind of pingpong rhythm: question — answer, question — answer.
