Rollin' over the river

Armed with rollers and 300 gallons of paint, about 200 members of nine Santa Maria, Calif., churches covered graffiti on 54 columns under the Santa Maria River bridge in less than an hour.

"Serve Santa Maria" was organized by Bethel Lutheran Church.

The congregation's pastor, Carl J. Nielsen, told the Lompoc Record that he was inspired to do the cleanup by the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering's day of community service in New Orleans.
