Bringing enthusiasm from New Orleans to Rockville, Md., after the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering and its theme "Jesus, Justice, Jazz," the youth and helpers ages 3 to 80 invested almost 300 hours to complete a mosaic at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Calling it "a way to remind ourselves every Sunday that we should be doing God's work with our hands," Mariel Shilling, 16, said the end result "is more beautiful and inspiring than any of us ever imagined possible."
