First Lutheran Church, Duluth, Minn., put its grief for Ben Larson, who was killed in the Haiti earthquake, into action on what would have been the seminarian's 26th birthday (Feb. 27).
The congregation — served by his mother, April Ulring Larson — wanted to assemble 1,000 health kits for Lutheran World Relief.
Seventy-five youth paired with adults to assemble the kits while Ben's music played in the background.
The project offered an opportunity for the congregation to heal, said member Beth Holst, who brought the idea to a Bible study. The youth also invited members to make kits at home, helping to exceed the goal — 1,500 kits.
