The only public school near El Mirador, a community on the outskirts of Guatemala City, was full. That left more than 20 6- and 7-year-olds with seemingly no hope of receiving an affordable education. But hope was found in the Jesus, Savior of the World Lutheran Church. After realizing the shortage of classroo m space, the church turned the back room of the local community center into the Augustinian Lutheran School for first-grade students. According to Stephen Deal, who lives in the school building, 20
children now are enrolled. A local parent-teacher group takes
responsibility for the smooth functioning of the school. Deal, a member
of Luther Place Memorial Church, Washington, D.C., serves as an
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America global mission volunteer.
