The happiest folks

In praise of retired church volunteers

It dawned on me that I have been blessed to work with the happiest people in America for many years, which is so very evident in the congregation where I now serve. Who are these people?

Their names are legion. They are retired folks who serve congregations as volunteers in a variety of ways. Not just through committee leadership and worship participation, but through daily and weekly participation in the everyday needs of the congregation. Physical, clerical, in the kitchen, around the property, anywhere there is a need. These nonpaid volunteers all have several characteristics in common.
