Hope from the top of the hill

In Tacoma, high-school students get a glimpse of tomorrow

Growing up in Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood with drugs and crime always close by, Yvonne Thorn, 18, found a safe haven at Peace Community Center. Each afternoon, the Foss High School senior goes to the converted gym at Peace Lutheran Church to study, stay safe and dream of college.

Thorn is one of about 55 high-school students who are Hilltop Scholars, one of the nonprofit center's programs. Here each day after school, she receives assistance with homework and the support and companionship of mentors and friends.

"It's helped me build a lot of good study habits and stay focused," she said. "The tutors here, they really put effort into helping you."
