Participants in the National Christian Council in Japan's urban-rural mission meeting warned against policies in Japan and other countries that put the economy first, whatever the cost.
In a March statement, participants said such policies have worsened safety standards at Japan's nuclear power plants and conditions for agricultural workers, migrant workers, day laborers and others.
A May 19, 2009 editorial in the Japan Times said poverty is a "major problem," and "irregular workers now account for one-third of the nation's workers."
