Malawi & sexuality

Malawi must not bow to pressure from donors to legalize homosexuality, the Malawi Council of Churches said in March.

Ecumenical News International reported that some Malawian clerics say international donors are critical of human rights in Malawi, where homosexuality is a criminal offense.

Forty percent of the country's budget comes from aid.

At presstime, Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, a Malawi gay couple, were being held in maximum-security prison, charged with indecency, facing a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
