The Episcopal Church Diocese of Los Angeles will consecrate Mary Douglas Glasspool, 56, a priest in a 22-year same-sex relationship, as an assistant bishop this May.
Glasspool's December election was ratified in March by a majority vote of the denomination's more than 100 bishops and dioceses, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori announced.
Glasspool becomes the church's second openly gay bishop, after Bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, elected in 2003.
