St. Paul Lutheran Church, Newark, Del., dedicated its expanded sanctuary with a price tag of $2 million in April.
John W. Keating, one of the pastors, acknowledged there was skepticism about an expansion during an economic recession.
"It is a contrarian investment in the future," he said. "It speaks of our faith in God's ability to find a way where there appears to be no way. We are renewing and looking ahead with certain hope."
The church, founded in 1953, began worshiping in an area funeral home.
