Visiting Oberammergau? Stop by and visit with this ELCA pastor

Waldemar "Wally" Meyer got more than he expected during his visit to the Oberammergau Passion Play in 2000.

This summer Waldemar "Wally" Meyer will return to Oberammmergau, Germany, to serve the Kreuzkirche (Evangelical Lutheran Church) as a "vacation pastor." In 2000 (above) he visited the church as a tourist — and ended up translating the sermon.
The ELCA pastor, who is fluent in German, was asked by the pastor of the Kreuzkirche (Evangelical Lutheran Church) in Oberammergau to read a Gospel lesson to people who came by after witnessing the world's most famed Passion Play.

"But when I got there he changed his mind and said, 'Instead, why don't I preach in German and you translate,'" recalled Meyer, pastor of Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Temple Terrace, Fla. "It wasn't easy because he would go on for several sentences before looking over to me to repeat it in English."
