In Istanbul, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is facing pressure based on a Lenten encyclical he wrote for the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians.
He had stressed the need for greater unity among churches and battled accusations from some of his bishops that ecumenism is heresy.
At the same time, the head of the U.S. National Council of Churches wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking for help assuring the safety of Bartholomew, who has been threatened with attacks.
