George Smith (left), rector of St. Mark Episcopal Church, and Heidi Johns and James Honig, pastors of Faith Lutheran Church, both in Glen Ellyn, Ill., stand at a commuter train station on Ash Wednesday, where Honig estimates they distributed ashes to 75 people.

A handout included the meaning of Lent, a prayer and an invitation to St. Mark or Faith.

A commuter left a phone message with Faith: "I just wanted to thank both of your churches .... I had thought I wasn't going to make it to church today because of work and a doctor's appointment this evening. I was so glad to see your ministers at the train station."
