When global disaster recovery is your job, what happens when tragedy hits home?

When global disaster recovery is your job, what happens when tragedy hits home — literally?

That happened in January for Louis Dorvilier, director for ELCA International Disaster Response, who was born in Haiti. When the earthquake struck, he was helping train Lutherans in Johannesburg, South Africa, for Lutheran Malaria Initiative work. "I wondered, 'My Lord, what are you telling me here?' I couldn't believe it," he said.

Dorvilier cut short the South Africa trip to return to the U.S., knowing that as a former Lutheran World Federation representative for Haiti and the Dominican Republic, he could offer much-needed first-response help. "I still have connections," he said. "I know the country. I know the people. I know the language."
