Ishmael Noko, Lutheran World Federation general secretary, and Olav Fykse Tveit, a Norwegian Lutheran who heads the World Council of Churches, called upon the international community to immediately cancel Haiti's debt in the light of the country's history of international and domestic exploitation, its resulting environmental and social devastation, and the January earthquake.
Noko said all International Monetary Fund aid should come "in the form of grants, not loans such as that which set the newly born republic on the road to intractable poverty."
